Sven Thielmann, lives as an author, journalist and photographer in Essen.
While still at school, Sven Thielmann worked as a jazz expert for German radio WDR and for numerous magazines and newspapers throughout Europe. The readers of his local newspaper WAZ appreciate him as a knowledgeable critic who also casts a sharp eye on his favourite subject as a photographer.
The technical and visual basics were taught to him as a child by his father, who worked with the designer and Folkwang teacher, Max Burchartz in his youth. In 1982, a performance by Jan Garbarek in Düsseldorf, where Sven Thielmann took pictures rather by chance, became the trigger for him to devote himself professionally to jazz photography. Since then, his pictures have appeared regularly in daily newspapers, specialist publications and books as well as on various recordings.
"Anyone who knows his pictures knows that this is not to be missed." - bild-akademie.de
The continuously expanding photo archive comprises approx. of 150,000 digital images, which are now gradually becoming accessible to the worldwide jazz community via IMAGO.
"Sven Thielmann manages to capture the individual aura of a person and to depict him as an artistic personality.."
