The nationally and internationally respected sports photographer who was an important partner and close companion of IMAGO.
Since the founding of IMAGO in 1997, he made a significant contribution to the agency's success with his photographic work. For decades, he shaped handball photography with his expert eye and his personality. Michael Heuberger recently passed at the age of 75 after a serious illness.
Born in Schutterwald in the Black Forest, Heuberger was a passionate photographer who self-taught himself the art of sports photography. In the second half of his life, he advanced to become one of the world's best-known handball photographers.
For years, Heuberger photographed for IMAGO at all 24 European Women's and Men's Handball Championships, while also working for the European Handball Federation (EHF). Heuberger was also active for the International Handball Federation and was an official photographer at all major tournaments, including the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.
Not limited to Handball tournaments and its teams – he also supplied IMAGO with other sporting events with special mention to his footage from SC Freiburg soccer matches, a team for which his passion truly lay.
In 2011, Heuberger succeeded in winning the IHF World Handball Photo of the Year. In 2016, he received the Sian Rowland Special Media Award from the European Handball Federation (EHF) on the final weekend of the European Handball Championship. These awards were just two of many testaments to the valuable work Michael Heuberger did for handball with great dedication.
