Chairman of Judges, Ray Wells announces the eight names, including The Guardian’s Fiona Shields and Shazad Ahmed of Sky News, selected to form this year’s judging panel.
Berlin, Germany - August 24, 2022. Former Picture Editor, Ray Wells has been appointed Chairman of Judges at this year’s UK Picture Editors Guild Awards, a prestige event in UK photography media dating back to 1977, announcing this week the industry names comprising this year’s judging panel.
Returning this year composed of 13 awards, including a brand new public vote, sponsored by IMAGO, the panel formulated by Well’s includes some top names in news media.
Fiona Shields, Head of Photography for the Guardian, joins the panel having previously judged prestigious awards such as World Press and Sony World Photography. Joined by Shazad Ahmed of Sky News, returning judge Jane Sherwood from Getty Images and Jon Mills from SWNS, once embedded with the Royal Marines in Iraq.
Alongside, Chief Researcher at Camera Press and Jamaica-native Lennox Smillie, Alasdair Baird from the Daily Record, Marisa Cashill with 25 years behind the lens at Johnston Press, and Picture Editor at The Week, Annabelle Whitestone – a former Sunday Times colleague of Ray Wells.
For the very first time this year, the public will also be invited to judge their winners by voting from a selected shortlist in the Photograph of the Year Award, sponsored by IMAGO. This will be the very first time in the Awards history that the public will be able to both vote, and attend, as a selection of registered applicants will also be invited to the London ceremony.
Set to be held at the Honourable Artillery Company HQ in London on October 17, the winners will be presented out of hundreds of entries at the celebrated event in front of special guests and invitees from across the industry.
