Jane Barlow secured top honors in the IMAGO Photograph of the Year category at the UK Picture Editors Guild Awards with her poignant photo of Queen Elizabeth II. Barlow's compelling shot was the top choice for thousands of participants in the IMAGO Photograph of the Year public vote.
The UK Picture Editors Guild Awards ceremony took place in London on Monday, celebrating excellence in photography across 12 categories. These ranged from Business Photographer of the Year and Canon Sports Photographer of the Year to Sony National Newspaper Photographer of the Year and the coveted IMAGO Photograph of the Year.
Out of 20 distinguished photographs, the public chose Jane Barlow’s photo in an online poll. The photo holds significance as it depicts the last public appearance of Queen Elizabeth during the ceremonial moment she met the new prime minister at that time, formally introducing Liz Truss to her role. Reflecting on the moment, Barlow mentioned, “I received many smiles from her.” She further noted the Queen appeared “frail” but remained in “good spirits.”
This is the second year of sponsorship by IMAGO for the UK Picture Editors Guild Awards in presenting the IMAGO Photograph of the Year accolade. In its inaugural year, 2022, Jonathan Brady from the Press Association clinched the title.
